Quinoa the Superfood!
Many of you have probably heard of this grain that is growing in popularity with a clean eating movement, but do you really understand why it is considered such a superfood? Although it is technically classified as part of the grain family it actually comes from the Spinach family! Although the tops of this leafy plant are edible it is the seeds that are most commonly consumed.
Here is the breakdown and why you should make it a part of your regular diet!
- Complete protein (which means as good as any meat product!)
- 1 cup of cooked quinoa has 4mg of iron, 90mg magnesium, 175mg phosphorus, 315mg potassium, 1.5mg zinc and numerous B vitamins like B6, Folate, thiamine and niacin
- In other words – really nutrient dense and good for you!
- About 160kcal per cup of cooked quiona that is mostly complex carbs but actually contains about 7g of protein – which is unbelievable!
- Extrememly easy to cook, light, fluffy and lends itself to any dish you add it to!
- Best for replacing starches in soups, pilaf, sitrfrys, salad toppings or side dishes
